Public Policy Degree

Are you interested in a career in public policy, public administration, or public affairs but don’t know how to begin? The first step that you must take if you want to obtain a job within this realm is to get a degree in a public policy field. While an undergraduate degree is a good start, your ultimate goal must be to obtain a Master in Public Policy (MPP), Master in Public Administration or Master in Public Affairs (both of which may be referred to with the initials MPA) degree.

Undergraduate Public Policy Degree

Your first goal on your journey towards working in public policy is to attain an undergraduate degree. The Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs and Administration (NASPAA) does not accredit undergraduate public policy programs, just graduate ones. Therefore, you have a bit more leeway in choosing an undergraduate public affairs, public policy or public administration degree program. It is always best, of course, to choose an undergraduate program from a school that holds accreditation through one of the major regional accreditation agencies recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA):

  • Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (ACCJC)
  • Higher Learning Commission (HLC)
  • Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE)
  • New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE)
  • Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU)
  • Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)
